It is assumed that the Turkish Angora cats origin from Felis Manul – animals that reside in the desert, the rocky terrain and the wooded slopes of the mountains of Central Asia. This beautiful wild cat is orange- red with black and white markings on the head, and the legend says that the Tartars tamed it and brought it to Turkey. However, it is very likely that the Turkish Angora cat is a distant cousin of Persian cats, and the Turkish Angora entrenched in the Turkish capital, Angora (Ankara today).

In the beginning this cat breed was very popular, but later the Persian cats were forced more and recently it is the case with the long-haired breeds. Although still existed in its country, Turkish Angora cats at the end of World War II disappeared from the West.

However, during the fifties and sixties of the 20th century, apparently from the zoo in Ankara, were imported to the US a couple of Turkish Angora breeds, and there began their breeding program, while other Turkish Angora were transferred to Sweden and Britain.

These cats are the bedrock of the Turkish Angora pedigree in North America and continental Europe. Turkish Angora cat’s appearance in many ways is similar to the Angora cat, because both of them have a sleek, nimble body with long slender legs.

Furthermore, both have small paws with tufts of hair on the toes and small wedge-shaped head. Their ears are large and erected, and both types of angora cats also have a long fluffy tail held upwards. Medium length hair is very fine and silky, and shimmers as the cat moves.

Angora cats in Turkey could be seen in a variety of colors, and each had its own descriptive name. Today, the Turkish Angora is recognized in a variety of colors, patterns and shades.

However, the most popular are white Turkish Angora cats with blue eyes – which, unfortunately, like other white cats are often deaf in one or both ears.
