Only in 2002 was accepted the third generation of this new breed with the experimental status, and only by TICA. Savannah cat is a new breed – in many ways still in the early “experimental” stages of development. It was created as a hybrid of domestic cats and African serval cat (Felis serval), african wild cat with long limbs and light brown hair with black dots and with a height of about 60 inches and length of approximately 1.5 meters from nose to the tip of tail.
Since the domestic cat and serval are different types, it is difficult to achieve a successful mating between them, and therefore Savannah cats are still very rare. Serval cats pregnancy lasts 74 days, and of domestic cat about 65 days. This difference has led to premature brake and stillborn kittens.
Savannah cat has the appearance of small “replica” of its wild ancestor. It is much higher than the average domestic cat. The first three generations of savannah cats were called Fl, F2 and F3 – these offspring had punctate pattern fur, identical to that of a serval cat, but with a different color background.
So far, the only permissible color variations were golden to orange with clear black spots, black with clear black spots, and black smokey. In addition, the texture of hair can vary from coarse, like fur of serval cats which is thicker, softer and smoother than the hair of domestic cats.
Some growers use Bengals in their breeding programs aimed for retaining of the enhancing samples of fur, and in the expectation that, with each successive generation, the Savannah cats “shrink” until it is roughly of the same size as the average domestic cat.
It was expected that the first three generations (Fl , F2 and F3) brings sterile males and fertile females. Rare examples of savannah cats show that this new breed of very special and beautiful: slim and muscular, with long slender legs and tiny feet with long toes. Savannah cat has a tail that is three –quarters of the length of the tail of the average domestic cat.
When in alert, the tail of Savannah cat is curled up and a little bit over the back. The body is long but more massive, and the ears are large and rounded. The eyes are slightly oval and almond shaped, and can be dark yellow, green, gold or caramel brown color.
Character of Savannah cats is described as “same as dogs” – as it really likes to be the center of activity, but like all cats it also enjoys climbing. Although still rare, Savannah cats have a powerfully built body which is resistant to diseases.
