The first Oregon Rex cats appeared in 1944. When the first such kitten was born, it differed from its siblings by its curly fur while at the same time all the other kittens from the same litter had straight fur. This kitten was born in Oregon US, so this is from where this breed got its name.

Sometime after that, the first Cornish Rex cats were imported from UK, and were soon interbred with Oregon Rex. Since that time, a purebred Oregon Rex was established and this became one of the most popular Rex breeds in the US. Since most of the Rex cats were crossbred, the Oregon Rex cats didn’t endure as a standalone breed either, and the last purebred Oregon Rex cat died back in the 1972.

Oregon Rex cats are a result of mutation. It is quite obvious that the mutation gene that is responsible for their curly hair is the same one other Rex cat breed carries. By crossing cats with Oregon Rex features, results can be litters with normal non-curly fur.

These cats are domestic cats with rex coat variations. This occurred as a result of spontaneous genetic mutation. As mentioned earlier, this cat breed was crossbreeding with other Rex cat types and until today it merged with other popular Rex breeds such as Cornish Rex and Devon Rex.

Oregon Rex cats have a curly coat that is short, tight and silky. Their head is wedge shaped, the ears are large with rounded edges, and their eyes are oval shaped and medium sized. They also have a tiny and elongated body build, long and slim tail, long legs and round paws.

The character of Oregon Rex cats is very similar to the other Rex breeds. These cats are very affectionate, playful and sometimes can be a bit arrogant. These cats have a dominant character and sometimes can be complicated to handle.
