The Kurilian Bobtail cats are not very well known out for their native territory (Kuril Islands). It is considered to be a Japanese type of cat breed, as the Kuril Islands have a very long history of their chain island that runs from the east point of Russia to the tip of Hokkaido (Japanese Island). The Kurilian Bobtail cat is also known as Curilsk Bobtail, as Russians embraced this breed and promoted it as Russian aboriginal breed, or Kuril Islands Bobtail or simply as Kurilean. In 1994, this cat breed was adopted by the WCF.
The Kurilian Bobtail cat can be either shorthaired or longhaired with a semi cobby type of body and fluffy tail. The hind legs are a bit longer than the front legs, and with this characteristic is resembles a lot the Manx cat breed. The shorthaired version of this cat breed is a natural breed which exists for more than 200 years. Because of their rodent hunting abilities, these cats were very popular in Russia and some other parts of Europe. Also, the Kurilian Bobtail cat is very rare in North America.
Some even consider this cat breed very closely related to the Japanese Bobtail cat because both of them share the same kind of short kinked tail. However, the tail of the Japanese Bobtail is less cobby, more angular and leaner.
This cat breed is a great hunter and fisherman. This explains why these cats enjoy being near water and playing in the water. Even though these cats have a very wild look, they are very gentle by their nature, intelligent and playful.
These cats are known for their distinctive kinked short tail. Their tail ranges from 2 to 10 inches. The color of their eyes matches the color of the fur. The most common eye colors are yellow-green, green, and yellow. Most common fur colors are grey to red, and some have bobtail stripes.
