Javanese cats, even though having such a name, are actually not from Indonesia or java. Genetically, Javanese cats are long haired cats and their name was given by Helen Smith in 1950. It isn’t known whether she gave them such a name because she travelled or perhaps even lived in Indonesia, but the name is simply derived from the tradition of using names of Asian islands and countries for Oriental cat breeds.
There are a couple of cat breeds that were inspired by Siamese cats, and created by breeders who wanted to take all the qualities of the Siamese cat and alter their coat color. Because of this, Javanese cats as well as Balinese, Oriental Shorthair or Colorpoint Shorthair have very similar conformations and personality types. The differences between these breeds is in the color, coat length and patterns. Javanese cats are a longhaired version of the Colorpoint Shorthair.
Javanese cats are a breed of domestic cat. They are recognized by the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association). This cat breed is longhaired oriental. They developed in North America. This cat breed is different from domestic cats of Java. It has a long and silky coat and in a variety of colors. Javanese cats are very popular among show cat fanciers as colorpoint cats as they can develop very odd or rare colors (white or red) or very odd and rare patterns (tortie or tabby).
Javanese cats are very intelligent cats and very vocal. They are very playful, very active and enjoy the human contact. They even become depressed if they are regularly not entertained by humans. Also, Javanese cats stand for very good mouse hunters.
This cat breed also shares some genetic defects with the Balinese and Siamese cats. For example, they can suffer also from deafness, cross eye, hip displacement, arthritis or joint issues. Javanese cats have the same conformation as Siamese cats but with softer lines and less extreme body type. Their coat doesn’t tangle due to the fact that it lacks undercoat and the fur is semi long.
