This cat breed is very similar to the Siamese cats and is registered only by the CFA (Cat Fancier’s Association) as a separate breed. All other organizations recognize them just as a part of Siamese breeds.

The difference between the Colorpoint Shorthair cats and the Siamese cat breed is in colors. While Siamese have only four colors, the Colorpoint Shorthair cats have sixteen. All the other features, especially their body style, coat length, personality, they share with the Siamese cats.

Some people claim that Colorpoint Shorthair cats are just a hybrid of Siamese cats, while other claim that they should be considered Siamese cats due to the fact that they are pointed like Siamese. The thing is that this cat breed is actually a result between crossing a Siamese cat and American Shorthair breed. In fact, this is the same hybridization that is responsible for the creation of the Oriental breed of cats.

This cat breed dates back from the 1940s when they were just an experiment of trying to create a Siamese cat with other colours, different than the traditional four colours. Here are just some of the colours in which we can find the Colorpoint Shorthair cats – lynx point, lilac point, blue point, chocolate point, seal point, fawn point, cinnamon point, cream point, red point, tortie point and torbie point. For example, when a solid colored kitten is born from Colorpoint Siamese parents, it is still considered as a Colorpoint Shorthair cat breed due to the fact that it carries the gene of its Colorpoint parents.

The Colorpoint Shorthair cats are very intelligent and people friendly. They are very affectionate and like to be around people and to play. They don’t adapt very well to strangers or to changes of environment which can result in becoming sensitive and with nervous temperament. The same as Siamese cats, the Colorpoint Shorthair cats can be very vocal and they pretend demanding attention from their owner. What is interesting is that they have more than hundred vocal sounds, which is more than regular cats. Male Colorpoint Shorthair cats can sometimes too aggressive over other animals or when defending their territory, so they are not recommended for households that already have a pet as they like to show their dominance.

  • I find this medium-sized cat interesting. They are known as talkative and opinionated and they expect your attention. If you enjoy talking to someone throughout the day, the Colorpoint cat can be your buddy. This social cat is demanding. It does not like being left alone for a long period of time. The Colorpoint Shorthair Cat is intelligent, agile, and athletic. They love to play. They are loving and loyal pets who will pout if not given some attention. Their short, fine coat must be combed by stainless steel comb every couple of weeks. Their litter box must be kept clean. Colorpoints are very particular with their hygiene. This cat is one of the perfect choices for families with children who love to play.
