Named after the Indian city in which we can still find  black leopards or panthers, Bombay cat is the result of efforts by the U.S. breeder Nikki Horner of wanting to create a “miniature black panther”.

Bombay cats originated from crossing a black American Shorthair cat and a brown Burmese cat. Thus, the resulting kittens were black because they had only one Burmese gene but had a silky short fur. It is interesting that it may take even two years while the luxurious full depth and color of the hair that Bombay cats have is fully developed.
It took a long time until the Bombay cat breed was accepted, but it was in 1976 that CFA recognized their status of champions, and since then the Bombay cat changed her appearance so that it no longer resembles its Burmese ancestors.

Today Bombay cats resemble much more to American Shorthair cats. Their face is moderately wedge-shaped, and the skin on the nose pads and on the feet and in the edge of the eyes is completely black (or very dark brown).

Their ears have rounded tops and are slightly curved forward creating the impression that the Bombay cat always listens intently everything you are saying! They also have a long tail with straight and muscular body – which is surprisingly tight.

Bombay cats have quite an insatiable appetite, and although they can become quite large adult cats never lose their natural grace.

Bombay cat is very attached to the owner. They can spend hours seated in someone’s lap, enjoying the petting and caress of the fur which maintains its shine and with great texture.

  • A black cat may signify bad luck or bad omen for others but those who love the Bombay Cat knows that it’s not true at all. This tightly coated and sleek-looking feline is more than just a superstition object. It is actually a sweet and loveable family member with striking yellow eyes. It loves getting attention and it is perfect around children. It loves to socialize and be with its owners. It is a medium-sized but muscular cat which can weigh up to ten pounds. It can live up to two decades which is plenty of time to fill with memories with its owners.

  • Sorry, but these are not bombay cats. See bombay on cfa site. They have a round face with wide set large round eyes and muscular build.
