American Curl is a cat breed that includes both longhaired and shorthaired species. Shorthaired American curly cat required a little more time to develop as the original curly cats were all long-haired and short-haired cats carry many hidden genes for long hair and have long-haired kittens.

The American curly cat is not known the best for its hair but is known for a mutation that causes bending of the ears of the cat to the back, which causes her very special appearance. American curly cat can appear in three stages: a cat with ears pointing backwards (first degree) called American curly with straight ears and these cats become pets, those with 50% ear rotation (second degree) are used for breeding, and those with full crescent (third degree) compete at shows.

The origin of the breed is unknown, although in 1981 a black, long-haired stray kitten with unusual curled ears found a new home with Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakeland, California. The couple named the cat Shulamith, which means ” peaceful ” and all of today’s American curly cats – longhaired or shorthaired – derived from it.

These cats were first shown at an exhibition in 1983 in California, and soon were officially recognized in the United States. The American curly cats arrived to Britain in 1995 year. Apart of this, the American Curl cat became popular not only because of its distinctive face – often described as “fairy” but also because of its lively, friendly and independent spirit.

This is a medium sized cat (weights between 5 to 10 lbs) with moderately strong muscles, it has strong legs, a bit curved at the front and back legs are slightly longer than the front. This is generally a healthy cat breed especially due to its genetic pool with non pedigree cats. They don’t reach maturity until 2–3 years of age.

When it comes to their hygiene, it is important to note that their ears require frequent cleaning in order to prevent any infection as well as gentle handling in order to prevent any damage.

  • The American Curl Cat has the cutest ears ever! Its ears are curled back and it is perfect for those who prefer unique pets over conventional-looking ones. However, you should remember that its ears are very sensitive and if not touched with care, it may be damaged. It is relatively healthy but it requires regular cleaning to protect it from different kinds of infections. It is great around people and other pets. It loves socializing and loves getting a lot of attention. It is also very affectionate and it loves to cuddle. It follows you around just like what a dog does.
