Until recently, there were very little bobtail or bobtail cat breeds. But the Manx cat and the Japanese bobtail cats exist for hundreds of years already and they even appear on ancient drawings and paintings, as well as on the facade of the temple Gotokuji in Tokyo, presented with raised paws which symbolizes good luck.

The American Bobtail cat is one of the first among these new bobtail cat breeds. Its origin is not exactly known – bobcat (one breed of North American’s wild cats), the only tailless cat that lives on the continent, but its share in the development of American bobtail cat has not been confirmed.

It is also possible that this cat breed has genes of the Manx or Japanese bobtail cats since both of these cat breeds were popular among farmers in the United States. Manx cats exist in the USA for many years already while the Japanese bobtail cats first appeared on the show in the U.S. in 1963. , and the first cats for breeding arrived in 1968.
The thing is that the American bobtail cats require at least 2 to 3 years to develop which means that their level of development is much slower than with many other domestic cat breeds.

The American Bobtail is actually a short-tailed cat with moderately long body. What is interesting is that the hind legs are much longer than the fore legs, and the feet are round. Ears are medium sized and wide based. The eyes are almond shaped and their size is proportionate to their head. When it comes to the color of their eyes, it varies depending on the fur color. The tip of the tail is quite visible above the back, it is usually straight or curved, and just slightly knotted.

The American bobtail cat is a very playful cat, very energetic and friendly and intelligent. However, what is interesting with this cat breed is that some of them are born not playful and scared and are not easy to open up, therefore they require more patience.

American Bobtails have dog-like personalities. These cats often play fetch, and they like learning tricks. They also pretend greeting their owners at the door. This cat breed is very tolerant when playing with children, and they don’t have tendency of scratching. However, what makes them different from other cats as well is the fact that they like stealing and hiding shiny objects and stashing them in a hiding place.

  • As its name implies, the first thing that I noticed about the American Bobtail cat is its tail. It is a very sweet and a highly intelligent creature. It provides entertainment to its masters and warmth whenever they cuddle. It loves playing different kinds of games especially fetch. It never gets tired of playing and loving its owner. This is perfect for those who love cute cats as it will take about a couple of years before it reaches its adult size. Some American bobtail cats have short and dense hair while others have long and medium coat. It comes in a lot of different colors and patterns.

  • I too, have the honor of living with an American Bobtail…Loki…this cat is so sweet and kind….18 lbs at 3 years of age….he’s beautiful…wish I could show him to you.

  • In the spring of 2017 a beautiful mail Bobtail showed up at our remote country home in upstate NY. He immediately fell in love with his new family. He is non allergenic, not even a little and is so playful. He cuddles in your lap and will sleep for hours. I have never heard of a bobtailed cat until he showed up one spring day, but now that he is a member of our family I have to say, I have never seen a better breed… The most important part is that I am not allergic to him…
