The Aegean cat originates from the Cycladic Island of Greece and it is actually a naturally occurring landrace of domestic cats. This cat breed exists for the last 20 years only, as it started developing as a formal breed in the 90’s. At the same time, the Aegean cat is considered to be the only native Greek cat breed.

However, this cat breed is considered to be among the oldest domesticated cat breeds as they were very common as feral cats on the Greek islands. They were found normally at fishing ports looking for food. For this reason, in Greece, this cat breed is considered to be a national treasure.

Even thought this cat breed begun to be bred systematically just recently, the truth is that Aegean cats has been already domesticated for many centuries and because of that they became adapted very well to humans. Aegean cats are very social cats that don’t find any trouble living in apartments. These cats are intelligent, very lively and active as well as communicative, and they don’t hesitate in drawing people’s attention in any way possible.

Aegean cats are medium-sized and very muscular. This is a semi-longhaired cat breed. The fur is bi-color or tri-color; but the main color is always white while other colors take only 1/3 to 2/3 of the body. Some of the other dominant colors can be cream, black, blue or red. Also, the fur color can be with or without tabby striping. The paws have a round shape and are of a medium size. The ears have rounded tips and are covered with hair. The eyes are almond shaped and their color is normally green (any shade).

It is very interesting that Aegean cats are free from most common feline genetic diseases right because of the way they developed.

This is a semi long haired cat breed and when it comes to taking care of its hygiene it is quite simple – only occasional grooming will be enough to keep your pet tidy and clean.

  • The Aegean cat is perfect no matter where you live. You can even have this cat as a pet even when you live in an apartment. It is one, if not the most popular domesticated cat which can live around people well. Just like most cats, it is an intelligent cat who loves people’s attention. Its fur can grow somewhat long and it is usually bi-color. However, there are also some that are tri-colored. About half of its fur is white while the other parts may have the color black, blue, red, or cream. It may or may not have stripes.

  • My Aegean is loyal, loving, and hunts. Loves the outdoors where she can catch birds, chipmunks, skinks, mice, rats, cockroaches, and flies. She is repectful and caring. She has recently weaned a simese kitten. Her biggest litter is 5, she has all three colors, and the half that is white is the belly region and mostly legs. She has large green eyes, and the simese she gave birth to has blue eyes. She is 6 years old and has had no shots, no vaccinations, no medications whatsoever.

  • My wife and I would like to find two kittens. Does anyone know they can be found in the Pacific northwest?

  • My family adopted an Aegean from the Boise humane society. We thought we were just getting a black and white kitten. When Moo was about a year old, the kids and I were watching Cats101 on TV. The Aegean breed was featured and we all said, That’s Moo! She is a delightful cat. Very active, very social. She is the ultimate bug killer and has learned to turn on the kitchen faucet so she can play in the water. Negative traits include eating homework and keyboard stomping. Positive traits include snuggles, long conversations, and pest control.
