Chausie cat is one of the newest cat breeds – registered by TICA – only in July 1995.  It was a cross between an African jungle cat ( Felis Chaus ) and domestic cats. African rainforest cat is also known as swamp cat, and resides in Egypt and southern Asia, where it can be found, as its name suggests, in the wetlands and forest areas. The primeval forest cat is one of the largest small wild cats, and can have from 7 to 16 pounds.

TICA recognizes temporarily Chausie cat in three colors – all the same colors of wild jungle cats: black, black with silver and gold Abyssinian pattern, which varies from reddish color ( like the color Abyssinian ) to light reddish- tan .

As kittens, Chausie breeds often have stripes or spots, but as they become mature the patterns disappear and remains a beautiful fur with Abyssinian pattern. In adult cats, stripes on the legs remain visible.

Their head is wedge-shaped with moderate angular snout and rounded mustache pads, their eyes are large and slightly inclined towards the lower edge of medium-sized ears. (Tufts of hair on their ears, like their wild ancestors had, are highly desirable in Chausie cats). Yellow and gold colors of the eyes are preferred, but hazel is acceptable as well.

A special feature of Chausie cats is their relatively short tail. It is only three -quarters the length of the common domestic cat tail length – so the tail of Chausie cats is placed only slightly below the hock hind legs. For that characteristic is responsible the recessive gene.
Chausie cats are famous for their speed and agility: they can jump vertically up to a height of almost two meter, and their long hind legs allow her great speed! With a rectangular shaped body, full, broad chest and strong bones, Chausie cat would ideally be twice the length of their height.

Therefore, this big cat is often two times higher than the average domestic cat, and can be up to three times heavier! Despite their size, Chausie cats are cuddly and affectionate and also very loyal to their owners. When it comes to behavior, we can easily describe them as ‘ like dogs ‘ – perhaps because of their loyalty and devotion, as well as the fact that they are extremely intelligent: love to fetch toys when you throw it to them!

  • Athletic, curious and intelligent this is how they described the Chausie cat. It is a little different than others because of their moderately long legs and their heads are slightly long than other domestic cats. They are also dog-like traits. Chausie loves to wear leashes specially when they playing in the water. It also requires a lot of exercise to dispel their energy that was longer than other domestic cats. They are faithful, devoted, friendly and easily to be trained. Chausie love to play along with children and other pets. Because of their short coats they didn’t need much attention in grooming.
